Quick Start Guide

Electronic gadgets often come with a Quick Start Guide, also known as, “If you won’t read the instruction manual, at least read this one page, you lazy bum, before you break something.”

SO... one of our riders gave us this great idea: a Quick Start Guide.  If you don’t want to read all of this lovely yet annoying web site, here’s the minimum you need to know to have fun on the ride.*

When Is the Ride

Saturday September 14, 2019

How Long Is It?

There are five routes -- your choice:

25 miles • 50 miles • 73 miles • 108 miles • 150 miles

The Route Map & Turn Sheet

We do not release the route map or turn sheet in advance.

I'm confused about the route I picked -- how do I get there?  Where does it start?

All the info right here.

Is the Route Marked?

Yes.  Details here.

How Do I Register?

There’s ONLY one way -- click here.

How Much Does it Cost?

Prices start at $99 for the 25-mile route; $200 for all other routes.  Kids 12 and younger ride free on the 25-mile route, and pay regular price for the longer routes. NO FUNDRAISING REQUIRED.  \

What Should I Bring With Me?

Helmet (MANDATORY)

Extra Money

TWO water bottles, or you will dehydrate and die.  (Have a nice day!)

Cell phone

TWO inner tubes that fit your bike (even if you don’t know how to use them, someone else will).

A small tire patch kit and a small pump (see above, re: inner tubes)

A small gym bag or daypack with a change of clothes and a towel for the free hot showers at the finish line.

Your superb good sense of humor.

What Should I Leave Home?

Giant padlock

Giant ego

Day-Before Check-In and Bike Loading

If you want you can check in the day before the ride, which will get you riding faster on ride day.  This is optional.  There is a $12 charge for this.  Details here.

Where and When Do I Show Up on Ride Day?

Just look below for the start line and distance you prefer.

WARNING!

There is no water at the Mastic-Shirley start line. You MUST show up with your TWO water bottles ALREADY filled.

EAST HAMPTON

Use Extreme Caution Here!

East Hampton is where the 25-mile riders actually start pedaling the ride.

For 99% of you 25-mile riders, you’re going to check in at your choice of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Babylon, Hampton Bays, or Mastic-Shirley (see above) and we will transport your bike and you out to East Hampton for free.

HOWEVER...

We’ve heard from a VERY few riders who will already be near East Hampton the night before the ride, and they want to get to that East Hampton location on your own.  This note is ONLY for those VERY few. (If you’re not sure if this applies to you, the answer is probably no!)

OK... are we alone now?  Everyone else is gone?  Good!

If you are driving yourself to the East Hampton location it is:

Living Waters Church

69 Industrial Road

Wainscott, NY

Driving directions here.

You should be there at 10:00 a.m.  Too early and no one will be there to help you; too late and we’ll be gone!  (So if you’re early and it seems like no one is around, don’t panic -- we’ll be there soon!)

VITAL NOTES ABOUT THIS LOCATION

Our Manhattan, Brooklyn, Babylon, Hampton Bays, and Mastic-Shirley start lines have all the goodies -- breakfast food, mechanics, water... at this location we’ll have NUTHIN’, since it’s not really a start line for us -- more of a transport depot.  Our staff will be there to hand you your rider I.D. wristbands and route sheets, and there will be some portable toilets, but that’s it!  Please be SURE to fill your water bottles before you leave the house.

There is no transport back to this location for your bike or for you. If you leave a car here you will need to get a ride back here on your own -- we aren’t able to help with this, and we don’t know of any public transport that goes here.

_______________________________________________

Start Times

There is no mass start for any of our routes. Just check the charts above for when and where to show up.  (But watch those times in the charts above -- we DO leave these locations when check-in ends. If you are late, we will be GONE.)

The Finish Line

Complete finish line info is here.

How Do I Get Home from Montauk?

This is a one-way ride -- it ends in Montauk, NY and you need to find a way home for your bike and you. These are your choices.

Get a lift home from a friend.  Driving directions here.

Take our optional transportation home on Saturday immediately after the ride.

Stay overnight and take your own transportation home on Sunday. (You CAN take the train home on Sunday. You CAN’T bring your bike on that train, even if you have a bike pass -- LIRR rules.)

If you’re staying in Montauk you can leave your bike with us and we will delivery it to Manhattan, Brooklyn, Babylon, Hampton Bays, or Mastic-Shirley, where it will be guarded by our staff. You can pick your bike up on Sunday any time between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. NOTE: Sunday bike pick-up for Brooklyn is 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

We do NOT load bikes on Sunday itself.

Transportation details here.

Where’s My Bike?

Bikes shipped back to Manhattan will be at W. 33rd Street between 11th Avenue and 12th Avenue.

Bikes shipped back to Babylon will be behind the Babylon LIRR station.

Bikes shipped back to Brooklyn will be at:

Bicycle Habitat bike shop

560 Vanderbilt Ave

Brooklyn.

NOTE: We love Bicycle Habitat but they are NOT involved in this process -- it's just a great meeting place. So please don't call them with Ride to Montauk questions -- they don't know the asnwers, and nor should they!

Bikes shipped to Hampton Bays will be at

The Local Bicycle Shop

39 W Montauk Hwy

Hampton Bays, NY 11946

Bikes shipped back to Mastic-Shirley will be at the Mastic-Shirley train station.

Anything Special I Need to Know?

We ride rain or shine -- no rain date, but we do offer optional rain insurance here.

Helmets mandatory

Bring a cell phone if you can

Free showers after the ride -- bring a town, soap, and a change of clothes.  We will drive a bag to Montauk for you so you don’t have to carry it.

That’s it!
